A casual Tex-Mex and Mexican local chain relying on Southwest staples and popular margaritas

In Short

The pink-and-green exterior broadcasts the casual nature of this eatery.  Several brightly painted dining rooms provide refuge in cooler months, but the patio is where couples, college students and large groups soak up the sunshine and the popular margaritas.  Queso compuesto is a hearty mix of guacamole, chunky pico de gallo, seasoned ground beef and cheese.  Catfish tacos get a cool kick from cilantro, avocado and tomatoes.

Purple Margarita!!!!! Posted by cobyparis on 7'17/2006

Purple margarita is what best decribes this place.  It's awsome, I had never had a purple margarita before this was amazing.  They limit you to only purchasing two of them, and now I see why.  They are very strong, you really only need one, but I decided to push the envelope and try two and let's just say I had to go and take a nap in the middle of the afternoon, hahaaaa! Oh yeah, and the food, we just had appetizers which I thought were pretty good, can't really comment on anything else.  All in all, great place to sit outside and have a few drinks with friends.  Will definitely return.

Great Ritas.  Posted by crisangelini4 on 03/20/2005

You have got to try the purple margarita.  The food is good and the new location by the Gateway theater makes it a great place to stop by before a movie.

Famous for its margaritas, this Austin hotspot is the perfect place to take that out-of-town Tex-Mex craving guest.  The restaurant's bright, neon decor gives it a festive, carnival-like atmosphere.  The fajita nacho appetizers are superb and big enough to be shared.  Large Tex-Mex meals for not so large prices make this a place you'll want to return to.  However, you may have to wait for a table on the weekends -- especially after a Texas home game -- so work your way over to the bar and try their delicious coconut pina colada.  The later the hour, the higher the noise level.  Big tables can accomodate large parties.  Casual attire and a good-time atmosphere reverberate off the walls, making it impossible to have a bad time.  Forgive the waiter if they seem distant:  this place is always crowded around dinnertime.

Consistently good food and service.  Unlike MOST other places, you know you are getting a good margarita instead of limeade.  Owner:  good for you!!

Baby Acapulco

Like its cousins across town, Baby Acapulco on Lakeshore, one of three locations of this family-run Austin institution, pours a potent award-winning margarita that can hold its own against the restaurant's fiery Tex-Mex and Mex-Mex creations. Founded in 1981, Baby Acapulco is still going strong, serving mountains of nachos, platters of fajitas, and a dozen different enchiladas. The restaurant's namesake nachos piled high with grilled shrimp, refried beans, cheese, guacamole, tomatoes, and sour cream make for great happy hour noshing. And the restaurant's hearty chicken tortilla soup gives you a generous dose of "what's good for what ails ya'," packed as it is with shredded chicken, avocado, cheese, and corn tortilla strips and served with rice and warm corn tortillas to boot! Baby's, as it's affectionately called by regulars, also offers five kinds of quesadillas and a number of house specials, among them an egg-battered chile relleno, multiple fajita platter combinations, and the muy macho steak and en chilada plate for big appetites.
